Practical design QA guide

Brand compliance checklist

A brand-compliant asset uses approved visual and verbal rules, remains accessible in its final context, and arrives in a technically safe format. Use this checklist before every design handoff.

What brand compliance means

Brand compliance is the repeatable verification that a finished asset follows the brand system it claims to represent. It is broader than visual consistency: the review also covers accessibility, terminology, export quality, and whether the available evidence is strong enough to approve the work.

A dependable process separates deterministic checks from subjective judgment. Exact colors, declared fonts, minimum logo dimensions, and contrast ratios can be measured. Photography style, emotional tone, and ambiguous raster details need an accountable human reviewer.

The five-part review

1

Brand color accuracy

  • Compare every visible color with the approved palette.
  • Use a documented tolerance for antialiasing and export variation.
  • Check text and background pairs against accessibility requirements.
  • Verify hover, focus, error, and disabled states—not only the default state.
2

Typography consistency

  • Confirm the declared font family, weight, style, and fallback behavior.
  • Flag substituted, missing, outlined, or unexpectedly flattened text.
  • Check hierarchy and spacing against the brand system.
  • Review licensing and delivery requirements before handoff.
3

Logo integrity

  • Use an approved logo variant and color treatment.
  • Verify minimum rendered width and clear space.
  • Check aspect ratio and look for stretching or accidental cropping.
  • Keep the logo distinct from nearby text, controls, and page edges.
4

Copy and terminology

  • Search for prohibited, deprecated, or competitor terms.
  • Confirm product names, capitalization, punctuation, and legal marks.
  • Review calls to action for the intended audience and channel.
  • Escalate text embedded in raster images when OCR evidence is unavailable.
5

Production quality

  • Confirm dimensions, aspect ratio, file type, and expected color mode.
  • Remove active scripts, external resources, and unsafe SVG elements.
  • Check that important content does not touch the canvas edge.
  • Open the final export—not only the editable source—before approval.

How to turn guidelines into testable rules

Brand guidelines often mix measurable rules with examples and aspiration. Convert only confirmed facts into automated checks. Record a hex value for an approved color, a specific font-family declaration, a minimum logo width, a clear-space ratio, or an exact prohibited phrase. Keep interpretation out of the rule unless a responsible owner has approved it.

Every automated finding should show its evidence, expected value, observed value, and limitation. When the exported file no longer contains the required information—for example, text flattened into a raster image—the correct result is “Needs review,” not a guessed pass.

For a repeatable method that separates visible artwork from file padding, follow these logo clear space rules.

Before review

Confirm the channel, dimensions, target audience, approved guideline version, and who can accept exceptions. A technically perfect asset can still be wrong for its intended placement.

After review

Preserve the final export, rule version, findings, reviewer, and exception decisions. Evidence makes the next correction faster and prevents recurring brand drift.

Put the checklist into practice

Start with the detailed 20-point design handoff checklist, test a color pair with the contrast tool, or create a local profile for a complete asset review.
