Logo clear space rules
Define a defensible spacing unit, measure the real visible logo, and preserve the exclusion zone across exports, containers, and responsive layouts.
What logo clear space means
Logo clear space is the minimum empty area that must remain around the logo's visible artwork. It creates an exclusion zone that nearby text, graphics, controls, container edges, and crop boundaries must not enter.
The rule is measured from the visible logo boundary, not automatically from the image canvas, transparent padding, or SVG viewBox. A placement passes only when every side meets the confirmed brand rule.
Clear space, exclusion zone, and minimum size
Clear space
The required distance between the visible logo and the nearest competing boundary.
Exclusion zone
The protected rectangle or shape created when the required distance is extended around all sides.
Minimum logo size
The smallest approved rendered width or height. It protects legibility, not surrounding separation.
These rules work together but answer different questions. A small logo can have generous empty space and still fail minimum size. A large, legible logo can fail clear space when a caption, menu control, or crop edge sits too close.
Three ways to define the x unit
Use the unit stated by the brand owner. Do not switch between methods to make a placement pass, and do not infer a rule from whichever part of the logo happens to be easiest to measure.
1. A fixed feature in the logo
One x may equal the diameter of a dot, the width of a symbol segment, or another stable feature. This works when that feature remains present and proportional in every approved variant.
2. Letter or typographic height
Wordmarks often define x from a capital height, lowercase x-height, or a named letter. Specify the exact letter and measure its visible form rather than the font's invisible line box.
3. A proportion of logo width or height
A rule may require, for example, a confirmed percentage of the visible logo width. Proportional units scale predictably, but the guidelines must state the dimension, percentage, and rounding rule.

Extend the required unit above, right, below, and left of the visible boundary to create the exclusion zone.

Check text, graphics, controls, container edges, image crops, and the final canvas edge—not only obvious objects.

The placement passes only when every measured side meets or exceeds the confirmed rule.

Save the rule version, unit, required distance, observed distance, asset size, and the boundary that caused any failure.
Measure visible artwork, not invisible padding
A transparent PNG may contain dozens of empty pixels around the mark. Those pixels make the file canvas larger, but they do not prove that the layout outside the image preserves the required exclusion zone. Begin at the first visible, non-transparent logo pixel.
An SVG viewBox is also a coordinate system, not necessarily the logo boundary. Paths may occupy only part of it, filters and shadows may extend beyond visible shapes, and exported artboards can contain intentional padding. Measure the visible approved artwork and document whether an official lockup includes a background plate as part of the logo.
The final image canvas or UI container still matters as a competing boundary. First locate the visible logo; then measure from that boundary to the crop, container, or neighboring object. Do not count hidden file padding twice.

Using the file box
Transparent padding or an oversized viewBox can make a failed placement appear safe.
Checking only one side
The nearest boundary can change on every side, especially inside navigation and cards.
Treating all backgrounds as empty
Patterns, photographs, hard color edges, and decorative shapes can visually intrude.
Scaling the logo without rechecking
Responsive resizing changes both minimum size and the absolute clear-space distance.

- Recheck the final exported asset after any layout or cropping change.

How much clear space should a logo have?
There is no universal distance. Use the unit documented by the brand owner, such as the height of a letter, a stable feature in the mark, or a percentage of the logo width or height. If no rule exists, a designer must define and approve one before the placement can be evaluated consistently.
Is logo clear space the same as minimum logo size?
No. Minimum logo size protects legibility by limiting how small the logo may appear. Clear space protects separation by limiting how close other boundaries may come to it. A placement can satisfy one rule and fail the other.
Does the background count as an object?
A uniform page or card background normally does not count as a competing object. A visible pattern, illustration, hard color boundary, photograph, or decorative shape can interfere with the exclusion zone and should be checked or escalated for review.
How do you measure clear space in responsive layouts?
Measure the rendered logo and its nearest boundaries at every breakpoint where size, container padding, navigation, or cropping changes. Do not assume a desktop pass remains valid after the logo or its container scales on mobile.
Can clear space be calculated automatically?
